DESCRIPTION:The proliferation of tightly\, machine learning coupled data pr
oducers and consumers at the endpoints of the Internet challenges traditio
nalcloud-centered data processing and service placement. The reasons are t
ight responsiveness requirements (e.g.\, for applications involving userin
teraction like augmented reality (AR) or smart appliances)\, strict data p
rivacy requirements (e.g.\, for camera surveillance or hospital data) and
thedepletion of existing network uplink resources for such massive reverse
data flow.In this talk\, I will give an overview over our research effort
s at NEC Labs for business units and the BigDataStack EU project that addr
ess these challengeswith edge computing\, dynamic procssing flows and the
concept of elastic services. Bio sketch. Jonathan Fürst is a visiting rese
archer at NEC Laboratories Europe and a postdoctoral researcher at the IT
University of Copenhagen. He has beenworking with software controllable mi
cro grids\, sensor networks\, IoT systems and Building Management Systems
(BMS) in non residential buildings. Duringhis PhD\, he was a visiting rese
archer at UC Berkeley in the Software Defined Buildings (SDB) group. His c
urrent research at NEC Labs focuses on developing better abstractions to p
rogram and run IoT applications efficiently from edge to cloud.
