DESCRIPTION:AbstractIn this seminar an overview will be given of the ERC Ad
G PortWings project and its achievements. The overview will first describe
the initial goal and the context in which the project came to existence\,
and then will give attention to the various aspects of the results which
have been achieved in the last years. This will include completely new met
hods to model and interconnect any multi-physical systems including the co
upling of Navier-Stokes descriptions of fuids and non linear elasticity. T
hanks to the new methodologies\, novel numerical discretisation methods ha
ve been found which allow structure preserving integration of physical des
criptions. This opens new possibilities on model reduction and control sch
emes able to use physically based models. SpeakerStefano Stramigioli is a
full professor of advanced robotics at the University of Twente. He is the
director of the Robotics and Mechatronics (RAM) department at the Univers
ity of Twente. He has been teaching courses on Modeling\, Control\, and Ro
botics for undergraduate and graduate students for the past 30 years. He i
s one of the world's leading experts in the modeling and control of Port-H
amiltonian and passivity-based mechatronic systems. He is an IEEE Fellow a
nd a member of the Royal Holland Society of Science and Humanities (KHMW).
He is the winner of the ERC Advanced Grant for the PortWings project on t
he modeling and control of physical systems described by the Port-Hamilton
ian based Navier-Stokes equations. He is a former AdCom member of the IEEE
Robotics and Automation Society (the society's governing body). He was Vi
ce President for Research of euRobotics (the most important European robot
ics society). He was Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Robotics and Automation M
agazine. He has been coordinator and principal investigator in numerous EU
projects on control and robotics for medical\, inspection and maintenance
\, and other applications. He has received numerous awards for his researc
h and has been an invited speaker at dozens of international schools\, wor
kshops\, and conferences for keynote or plenary talks. • Google Scholar: h
